Bertha Kawakami

Bertha Kawakami, a member of the Democratic Party, has won reelection in 2004 to the Hawaii State House of Representatives in the Hawaii State Legislature. Kawakami represents the 16th Representative District which includes the islands of Niihau and Lehua, as well as the Koloa and Waimea areas on the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii.

Rep. Kawakami has held the seat since 1987, when she was appointed to fill the unexpired term of her husband, Richard Kawakami, who died while serving as House speaker. She is an officer and director of H.S. Kawakami Stores, a retail empire founded by her father-in-law and now run by her brother-in-law. It includes Big Save supermarkets, Menehune Food Marts and several others.

Kawakami is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools. She has recieved her BA, 5th-year certificate and administrator's certificate from the University of Hawaii. Kawakami has a MA in education from New York University.

Professionally Kawakami has been a teacher, principal, district language arts specialist, education officer, deputy district superintendent on Kauai.

Kawakami was born on July 28, 1931 in Honolulu.
