Advocates to impeach the current President, George W. Bush, have advanced the following arguments as of 2005:
- The President "lied to the Congress" about Saddam Hussein having any weapon of mass destruction in his possession, or there being any credible evidence of same.
- The President and Secretary of State Colin Powell did immense damage to U.S. credibility with allies by insisting on their weak rationale to invade.
- The President and Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld wasted lives in the invasion, and caused great damage to the civilians, infrastructure and cultural heritage of Iraq unnecessarily. According to Kofi Annan the invasion was "against international law".
- Planning and execution of the invasion was botched in general, and failed to take into account many obvious and predicted effects of invading Iraq.
- U.S. Armed Forces recruitment is failing due to fear of dying in Iraq, and the unilateral and unfair extension of military terms of service for reservists. Only impeaching the President can send a clear signal that the U.S. Armed Forces selective service ("the draft") won't be re-implemented and restore military recruitment to pre-Iraq levels.
Current process proposed against Cheney
As Dick Cheney would rise to President were Bush impeached, there is a somewhat stronger case to impeach the Vice-President of the United States. Reasons include:
- Cheney is in a conflict of interest with respect to his ties to both Halliburton and oilcos that stood to benefit from the invasion.
- Cheney is a cyborg and accordingly can't sympathize very well with humasn (he is kept alive by a pacemaker). Hmm this reason seems to be trollish.
