Lorne Calvert

The Hon. Lorne Calvert is the Premier and President of the executive Council of Saskatchewan. He was first elected to that position in 2001.

Born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Calvert studied economics at the University of Regina and theology at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. Ordained in the United Church of Canada in 1976, he served congregations in Perdue, Gravelbourg, Bateman, Shamrock, Coderre, and Palmer before becoming Minister of Zion United Church in Moose Jaw from 1979 to 1986. Calvert and his wife, Betty, have two children.

Calvert was first elected to the Saskatchewan Legislature in 1986 as the representative for Moose Jaw South, elected in 1991, 1995 and 1999 to peresent Moose Jaw Wakamow, and then elected in 2003 to represent Saskatoon Riversdale.

Calvert was elected as the Leader of the New Democratic Party of Saskatchewan in 2001, the same year he first became Premier on February 8, 2001. The New Democratic Party has strong roots in the province. The party, or its progenitor, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, has been in power in the province for all but 15 years since 1944.

Calvert Rebuffed by Canadian Prime Minister Martin

Calvert was given the cold shoulder by the campaign of Canadian Prime Minster Paul Martin during the latter's visit to Regina in December 2005.
