Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) is the Cold War military doctrine that justified large buildups of nuclear missiles on the theory that the Soviet Bloc would never attack the U.S. with its missiles because if it did the U.S. would obliterate the entire Soviet Union with its missiles.
