Introduction
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, nicknamed "The Keystone State", was the second state to join the Union on Dec. 12, 1787. With 12.6 million residents, it is the 6th most populous state.
Ed Rendell's Political Strategy for Statewide Offices in Pennsylvania. Rendell believes that the way for Democrats to win statewide office in Pennsylvania is for them to hold their own in Allegheny County (Pittsburgh) and to overwhelm the Republican candidate in Philadelphia and its surrounding counties (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery). Rendell proved his strategy with his 2002 gubernatorial election when he won only 18 of Pennsylvania's 67 counties. However, he won Philadelphia by a 280,000 vote margin and Philadelphia's surrounding four counties by almost 235,000 votes. Ed cruised to victory by close to 333,000 votes, 53.6% to 44.2% over his Republican opponent Mike Fisher.
James Carville famously describes Pennsylvania as "Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between."
To date 104 Pennsylvanians have been killed in the War in Iraq.
