Merge with Securities and Exchange Commission

The Securities and Exchange Commission, often known by its acronym, SEC, is a part of the federal government. It is in charge of regulating the stock market and the corporate relations of publically held companies with their shareholders and to a lesser extent with their bond holders. It is an independent agency with a board of directors appointed by the President with Congressioal approval. In the wake of the Enron scandal, it has also been charged with regulating the accounting standards used by firms that audit publically held companies.
