The Udall Political Family

Mormon political family, mainly Democratic in orientation

Based in: Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon

Stewart Udall was first elected a US Rep. from Arizona in 1954. He won re-election in 1956, 1958, and 1960, and served until his 1961 appointment as Secretary of the Interior by President John F. Kennedy. He served as the Secretary of the Interior from 1961 to 1969.

His brother Morris, or 'Mo' as he was nicknamed, was elected to fill the vacancy caused by Stewart's resignation. He went on to be re-elected in 1962, 1964, 1966, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1980, 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1988, finally retiring in January 1991. In 1976, he ran for the Democratic nomination for President. He outlasted many other candidates and nearly succeeded in derailing eventual nominee Jimmy Carter in the Wisconsin primary.

In 1996, Gordon Smith was elected US Senator from Oregon. He is a cousin of Mo and Stewart, but unlike the other Udalls, he is a Republican.

In 1998, Stewart' son Tom Udall and Mo's son Mark Udall were both elected to the US House, from New Mexico and Colorado, respectively. Both of the younger Udalls and Senator Smith are currently in office.
