The American Revolution was a bourgeois or liberal revolution that began in 1776 and eventually ended British rule over 13 British colonies on the eastern seaboard of North America and established the United States of America as an independent sovereign state.

The revolutionary era began in 1763, when Britain defeated France in the French and Indian War, which was actually part of the first actual world war, a struggle between Britain and France for control of India, the Caribbean and North America. The end of the near term French miltiary threat meant that the English speaking American colonists could press their demands for greater authority over their own affairs against the British Crown. When London resisted the colonists pushed back in what began as a tax revolt and quickly escalated into a war for independence as republican extremists rhetorically outbid moderates who simply wanted to renegotiate the terms of colonial sunjugation with London.

The end of the Revolution is usually marked by the Treaty of Paris, in 1783 with the recognition of the United States.
