Bob Kerrey
From dKosopedia
Joseph Robert "Bob" Kerrey (born August 27, 1943) was Governor of Nebraska from 1983 to 1987 and a Democratic U.S. Senator from 1989 until 2001.
Kerrey served as a U.S. Navy SEAL from 1966-1969, losing the lower part of one leg in the Vietnam war. He was awarded a Bronze Star in 1969. In 1982 he ran successfully to be Governor of Nebraska, and he was reelected in 1986. In 1988 he was elected to the U.S. Senate, beating sitting Republican Senator Dave Karnes.
As a Senator, Kerrey was widely considered a moderate. However, he was at times very critical of Republican colleagues, once remarking that "Santorum is Latin for asshole" (Rick Santorum is a Republican Senator from Pennsylvania). In 2000 he chose not to run for reelection, and his seat was narrowly won by conservative Democrat Ben Nelson.
Kerrey served on the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States. He is now president of the New School University in New York City and was for a short while considered a possible candidate for NYC Mayor in 2005.
