Christian Democratic Union
From dKosopedia
The Christian Democratic Union (Christlich Demokratische Union, or CDU) was founded in 1945 by Konrad Adenauer. This new party became one of the major players in German politics. Ludwig Erhard's proposed social market economy became the basis of CDU policy, together with a strong orientation towards Europe and NATO. Five of Germany's eight post-war chancellors have come from the CDU, including the current Chancellor:
- Konrad Adenauer (1949-1963)
- Ludwig Erhard (1963-1966)
- Kurt Georg Kiesinger (1966-1969)
- Helmut Kohl (1982-1998)
- Angela Merkel (2005-)
In the 2002 federal elections, the CDU won 190 seats in the Bundestag.
