Christian Democracy is a political ideology that emerged at the end of the 19th century in response to revolutionary socialism and encouraged by the Papal encyclical Rerum Novarum issed by Pope Leo XIII. The subsequent 1931 Papal encyclical, Quadragesimo Anno issued by Pope Pius XI provided further encouragement.
Christian Democracy, as a vague set of guiding political principles, has led to the creation of various Christian Democratic political parties in Europe and Latin America. These parties, while generally conservative on social issues, tend to tilt left in Latin America and right in Europe on economic policy.
In Europe, Christian Democrats have sometimes appealed to nativist and anti-immigration sentiment.
