County

From dKosopedia

The County is a basic unit of local government whose origins lie in the development of British government. Derived from the French, the word originally referred to that portion of a country which was under the control of a comte or count. In English law the word was understood to mean the same as the Saxon word Shire.

Forty-six states in the United States have county governments. The exceptions are Alaska, which has boroughs, Louisiana, which has parishes, and Connecticut and Rhode Island, which have no counties.

In Britain, England and Wales have counties while Scotland has boroughs.

In Canada, three provinces are divided into counties, two provinces (Quebec and Ontario) are divided into both counties and districts, 4 provinces are diveded into divisions and British Columbia is divided into regional districts.

In Australia, Victoria is divided into counties while New South Wales is divided into shires.

Liberia is also divided into counties.
