Small Town Wingnuttery
On July 4, 2001 the City Council of lovely La Verkin considered, and later on July 24, 2001 actually adopted, an ordinance making the town a United Nations FREE Zone, outlawed the city making contributions to any UN project, declaring ay UN tax or international court decree invalid in the city and prohibiting the flying of the UN flag on a city flagpole. Violators could have been charged with a class-C misdemeanor. There weren't any violators. Then on January 16, 2002, the City Council repealed the silly ordinance, much to the annoyance of its sole supporter, Councilperson Al Snow. There is no evidence that the UN was ever aware of the 6 month long exercise in small town political stupidity.
