Oberlin College was founded by Christian revivalists in 1834 with the motto "Learning and Labor" in Northern Ohio in what is now part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. It was the first co-educational institution of higher education and the first to be racially integrated. In the 1960s, it was one of the first to repeal rigid curriculum requirements, to institute student designed courses, to have co-ed dorms, and to institute "Winter Term" the notion of a single month each year spent on a single topic of interest in a less structured environment. It remains a hotbed of liberal ideas nationally. In one recent year, the Democratic Socialists of America with roughly 600 members outnumbered the Republican club with roughly 8 members on a campus of 3,000 students.

Oberlin College is also known for its outstanding Conservatory of Music.
