Social Democratic Party
From dKosopedia
The Social Democratic Party (Sozialdemokratische Partei or SPD) is Germany's oldest major party. It has roots in the General German Workers' Association founded by Ferdinand Lasalle in 1863. Suppressed by the Nazis in 1933, it was reorganized after 1945. The SPD entered into a "grand coalition" with the CDU and CSU in 1966, before gaining power in 1969. Three of Germany's seven postwar chancellors have been Social Democrats:
- Willy Brandt (1969-1974)
- Helmut Schmidt (1974-1982)
- Gerhard Schröder (1998-present)
In the 2002 national elections, the SPD won 251 seats in the Bundestag, allowing it to maintain its governing coalition with the Greens.
