Terry E. Branstad (R) served four consecutive terms as the Governor of Iowa, from 1983 to 1999. Before that he was the Lt. Governor, and he served for six years in the Iowa State House.
Branstad is a lawyer, and since August 2003, he has been the President of Des Moines University. He serves on the Board of Directors of Iowa Health Systems.
In 2010, he defeated Chet Culver and won a fifth term as Governor of Iowa. His first two executive orders were to eliminate the use of project labor agreements on state construction projects, and to end the practice of automatically restoring the voting rights of convicted felons.

In 2010, Branstad resigned from Des Moines University in order to seek a fifth term as Governor of Iowa. (See Iowa Statewide elections, 2010.)
