• Jerry Kilgore resigned February 1, 2005, to avoid a campaign fund-raising restriction that applies to sitting state officials. He is a candidate for Governor.
• Article V of the state constitution prevents a sitting governor from serving more than one consecutive term, so Warner is not eligible to succeed himself. This restriction does not apply to the lieutenant governor nor to the attorney general.

CANDIDATES FOR EXECUTIVE OFFICES, 2005

Primary election date: Tuesday, June 14, 2005.
General election date: Tuesday, November 8, 2005

Candidates for Governor:

• Tim Kaine (D) Governor-Elect
• Jerry Kilgore (R)
• George Fitch (R) George Fitch earned 17% of the vote in the Republican primary.
• Shirley Harvey (Green) Harvey, who did not qualify for the ballot by the deadline, ran instead for the House of Delegates in the 69th district.
• Russ Potts (I)

In the Governor's race, Kaine earned 51.7% of the vote, easily defeating Kilgore (46%) and Potts (2.2%).

Candidates for Lieutenant Governor:

• Viola Baskerville (D) Did not win primary.
• Leslie Byrne (D)
• Chap Petersen (D) Did not win primary.
• Phillip Puckett (D) Did not win primary.
• Bill Bolling (R) Lieutenant Governor-Elect
• Sean Connaughton (R) Did not win primary.
• Gil Davis (R) (Withdrew April, 2005)
• Emmett Hanger (R) (Did not qualify by the deadline.)
• Mark Hopkins (I) (Did not qualify.)

In the Lieutenant Governor's race, Byrne earned 49.3% of the vote, just barely behind Bolling (50.4%).

Candidates for Attorney General:

• Creigh Deeds (D)
• John S. Edwards (D) (Withdrew March, 2005)
• Steve Baril (R) Did not win primary.
• Bob McDonnell (R)

As of November 23, 2005, McDonnell is ahead of Deeds by a mere 323 votes, representing less than 0.02% of the total votes cast. A recount is virtually certain.
