- January 10: Cuban Communist Party leader Julio Antanio Mella is shot to death in an assassination in Mexico City.
- February 11: The Vatican makes its peace with Italian Fascism by signing the Concordat and the Laterans Pacts.
- July 10: Republic of China troops seize all of the Chinese Eastern Railway (CFR);s rail and relegraph lines in a dispute over ownership with the Soviet Union.
- August: Riots in British Mandate Palestine.
- September 4: British High Commissioner for British Mandate Palestine issues proclamation that British judges will try criminal cases arising from the riots of August 1929.
- September 13: Commission headed by Sir Walter Shaw is appointed by London to investigate August riots in British Mandate Palestine. Commission report is published in March 1930.
- October 28: The first "Black Monday" for the U.S. stock market was the second worst day in U.S. stock market history. The second Black Monday occurs on October 19th, 1987 and was the worst day in U.S. stock market history.
- October 29: "Black Tuesday" for the U.S. stock market, with a near-record decline.
- November: John D. Rockefeller emerges from virtual seclusion to reassure the nation concerning the stock market, saying that "for the past several weeks my son and I have been buying sound common stocks". Eddie Cantor's response: "Sure, who else has any money left!"
