Kansas State Board of Education
From dKosopedia
Kansas State Board of Education is the elected state body charged with overseeing K-12 public education in Kansas. The Republican majority on the Board sparked national controversy on November 8, 2005 by approving a proposal to teach "Intelligent Design," a.k.a. Creationism Lite, along with Darwinian Evolution as a scientific explanation of how life began in Kansas public school biology classes.
The Board voted 6 to 4, with the 6 Repubulicans voting "yes" and the 4 Democrats voting "no." Voting "yes" were Republicans Steve Abrams, John Bacon, Kenneth Willard, Kathy Martin, Connie Morris and Iris Van Meter. Noting "no" were democrats Janet Waugh, Sue Gamble, Bill Wagnon and Carol Rupe.
The primary election on August 1, 2006 has ensured that the Board will be controlled by moderates next year, see Kansas State Board of Education election, 2006.
