Somalia located in the Horn of Africa, bordering the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, is east of Ethiopia.
Somalia was formed from an Italian Trusteeship and a British protectorate in 1960. The only African country to have 3 democratic elections after independence from colonial Europe. A military leader, Mohamed Said Barre, took control in 1969. Somalia was a pawn in the Cold War. It allied itself first with the Soviet Union and then with the United States.
Somalia is a country in East Africa most notable in U.S. history for an abortive U.S. effort from 1991 to 1995 to provide military support to aid efforts that resulted in the death of UN Peacekeeping Personal and the U.S. Marines in 1994 after an ambush, and for raising issues in U.S. immigration law on the deportability of person who are nationals of countries with no functioning government.
Southern Somalia is currently ruled by a mismash of at least four local warlords with no functioning national government. The Northern part of the country, Republic of Somaliland, ceased in May 1991 and has a function government and a constitution; although not recognized by any government, this entity has maintained a stable existence.
Somalia has a population of roughly 8.5 million with an area the size of Texas, around 637,657 sq km .
