Dick Gephardt is a former Democratic congressman from Missouri.
While in Congress, Gephardt served as Majority Leader from 1989 to 1995 and Minority Leader from 1995 to 2003. He retired in 2005.
Gephardt ran for President twice, both times losing the Democratic nomination. In 1988, Gephardt won the Iowa Caucuses but left the race for lack of money. In 2004, Gephardt withdrew after losing the Iowa Caucuses.
Throughout his career, Gephardt worked closely with organized labor. He is a strong supporter of universal health care, fair trade, and progressive taxation.
Gephardt has taken more conservative positions on foreign policy and social issues. Like most Democrats, Gephardt voted to authorize the Iraq War in 2002. Unlike much of his party, he also voted to fund the initial $87 billion payment for the war in 2004. He has since criticized President Bush's execution of the war.
