Azerbaijan is a country of 8 million people, located on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. Its neighbors are Russia, Republic of Georgia, Armenia and Iran. It used to be part of the Soviet Union, until it became independent in 1991. Azerbaijan has significant reserves of Oil, which it exports through pipelines that pass through Russia to the north, and Georgia and Turkey to the west.
The President, Ilham Aliyev, was elected in October 2003. He is the son of Heydar Aliyev, Azerbaijan's long time leader.
