Benjamin Harrison, of Ohio, a Republican, was the 23rd President of the United States who served from 1889 to 1893 (his great-grandfather of the same name was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and his grandfather William Harrison was the 9th President). He was elected despite the fact that Democrat Grover Cleveland, who preceded and followed him in the office of the Presidency, received a larger share of the popular vote.
He signed the Sherman Anti-trust act and six states were admitted to the Union during his tenure.
