Bernie Sanders in Quotes
"I believe that destiny has suggested that his small state of Vermont is going to lead America in a very different direction! And the day is going to come when people all over America will say, 'Thank you, Vermont.'" November 7, 2006
Background
Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1941. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1964. In 1981, he was elected Mayor of Burlington, VT. In 1990, he was elected to Vermont's at-large U.S. House seat. In the 1996 election Republican Newt Gingrich helped fund an unsuccessful effort to unseat him. Now Gingrich has become just one of many talking heads on Fox News and Sanders is in the U.S. Senate. In Congress, he founded the House Progressive Caucus, and was chairman of it for the first 8 years.
