Charles B. Rangel

Charles B. Rangel is a Democratic Congressman from New York, where he represents the 15th district. He has spent his entire career in public service, first as an Assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, and later in the New York State Assembly. He was elected to the 92nd Congress on November 3, 1970, and has been re-elected to each succeeding congress despite various ethical probes.
Rangel served in the U.S. Army from 1948-52, during which time he fought in Korea and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He is a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Rangel is known for his willingness to risk arrest in order to make his voice heard. In 1980 Rangel was arrested for participating in an anti-aparthied rally outside the South African Embassy in Washington D.C. He was arrested again in New York City in 1999 along with two other African American civil rights leaders Al Sharpton and David Dinkins while protesting the fatal shooting of an African American by four white police officers. He was again arrested in 2004 for trespassing while sitting outside the Sudanese Embassy protesting their abuses of human rights in the Darfur region. Congressman Rangel is a graduate of New York University and St. John's University School of Law. He lives in Harlem with his wife Alma, and they have two children.
