The Clinton Political Family

Based in: Arkansas, New York

Members: Bill Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton

Bill Clinton ran his first race at the age of 28 in 1974. It was a US House bid in which he narrowly lost to the incumbent. His first elective office was State Attorney General of Arkansas, which he won in 1976. He was elected Governor of the state in 1978 at the age of 32, was defeated for re-election in 1980, came back to win the office in 1982, and was re-elected in 1984, 1986 and 1990. He ran for and won the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1992, resigning the governorship the same year. That November, he handily defeated incumbent President George H.W. Bush and was inaugurated as President the following January. He won re-election in 1996 running against Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, and left office in 2001.

His wife Hillary Clinton, a Yale-educated lawyer and one of the most influential attorneys in the nation, served as the first lady from 1993 to 2001. In 1994 she was given the task of chairing a commission to write a healthcare plan. Though the plan failed, Hillary remained popular among liberal Democrats, and in 2000, she was elected Senator from New York State. She took her seat in January 2001.
