The Connecticut supreme court, is made up of a chief justice and six associate judges; there are ten intermediate appellate court judges, one of whom serves as chief court administrator.

The superior court is the major trial court, with more than 170 judges. The judges of all these courts are appointed to 8-year terms by the legislature, from nominations submitted by the governor, who must choose from a list of recommendations by a judicial selection commission; judges are reappointed based on the recommendations of a judicial review council.

The state's 130 probate courts are presided over by judges popularly elected to 4-year terms.
