Dean of the Senate is an honorary title granted to the most senior member (i.e., the one who has been there longest) of the United States Senate. It is presently held by West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd, a Democrat; it was previously held by the late South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond, a former Democrat who switched to the Republican Party. Should Senator Byrd leave the Senate, Senator Edward Kennedy will become the dean.
