Defense Intelligence Agency
From dKosopedia
Background
The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) was created in 1958, and it is a division of the Department of Defense. Its purpose is to provide 'combat intelligence' to the military services. The DIA is one of many American intelligence services.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has expanded the agency from analysis of tactical information into gathering intelligence through spies (so-called HUMINT). A recent advertisement called for agents who
- Demonstrate outstanding foreign language skills, and
- Have a background in hard science or special operations.
Historically, the CIA has run America's spy networks, so this is a dramatic change in policy.
Staff
- Mark Ewing was the Deputy Director from 2000-2005.
- James R. Clapper was the Director from 1992-????.
