False consensus effect

False consensus effect refers to the tendency to conviction that one's own beliefs, behaviors and preferences are widely shared and appropriate. This conviction typically convinces the unwitting sufferer that he or she belongs to a non-existent opinion majority and that holding contrary beliefs behaviors or preferences is uncommon or even deviant. False consensus efect is motivated by:
- the desire to feel one is like everyone else
- the desire for social support
- the desire to validate opinions
