Francisco Franco
From dKosopedia
Francisco Paulino Hermenegildo Teódulo Franco y Bahamonde Salgado Pardo, better known as Generalísimo Francisco Franco, was the fascist military of Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975. Often referred to as "el Caudillo" ("the leader") in much the same way that Benito Mussolini was referred to as Il Duce and Adolph Hitler referred to as Feuhrer, Franco ruled the Spanish State, the regime that had overthrown the Second Spanish Republic. Franco became a general in 1926, the youngest general in a European army, and from 1933 onward he was Commander in Chief of the Spanish Army. Using the Spanish Army as his political power base and drawing support from conservative Spanish landowners and the Roman Catholic Church he launched the bloody civil war that led to destruction of the democratically elected second Spanish Republican and its replacement with the Spanish State. Franco ordered the summary execution of tens of thousands of captured Spanish Republican prisoners of war.
