George Nethercutt

Congressman George Nethercutt (R) represents the 5th District of Washington state. Nethercutt was elected in the 1994 Republican sweep of congress and he beat the sitting Speaker of the House, Tom Foley. In 1994 he ran on the promise of limiting himself to three terms. He is currently serving his fifth term.
Nethercutt will retire from the House at the end of this session and is running for the Senate against incumbent Senator Patty Murray.

- On June 13, 2001, three months before the September 11, 2001 attacks by al-Qaeda on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Nethercutt was busy calling for a legal attack on so-called "eco-terrorism," including offering a bill that would convey mandatory prison sentences for any violence.
