The elder Gore attended YMCA Night Law School, and after graduating, held a series of local and state government jobs in Tennessee before winning a US House seat in 1938. He served from 1939 until his resignation in 1944 to enter the Army. He served in Congress again from 1945 to 1953, and in 1952 was elected to the Senate. He took his seat in 1953, was re-elected in 1958 and 1964, and served from 1953 to 1971, having been defeated in the 1970 elections by William Brock.

His son, Al Gore Jr., was elected to his old Congressional seat in 1976, and was re-elected in 1978, 1980, and 1982. In 1984, he won the US Senate seat being vacated by Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker. The younger Gore ran for President in 1988, but was defeated for the nomination by Michael Dukakis.

In 1992, Bill Clinton picked Al Gore to be his running mate. That November, the Clinton-Gore ticket defeated the Bush-Quayle ticket 43-38. Gore was re-elected as VP in 1996.

He easily won the Democratic Presidential nomination in 2000, and in the general election won the popular vote, but an extremely disorganized balloting system in Florida prevented him from winning the state outright. The Supreme Court then ordered the recounting of votes to cease, handing Florida, and the election, to George W. Bush by 537 votes.
