Rev. James Dobson is the board member and with Gary Bauer cofounder of Focus on the Family (FOF), which has been described as, "perhaps the largest and most dangerous censorship group today" in Dave Marsh's book 50 Ways to Fight Censorship. (Why only perhaps? Why pull punches?)
Dobson is a Protestant Christian fundamentalist family counselor who promotes what he claims are "traditional values." In his best-known book, Dare to Discipline, Dobson advocates beating children with switches, beginning at the age of 18 months. In 1985-86 he served on the Attorney General's Commission on Pornography (the Meese Commission). He claims to have extracted a confession from mass murderer Ted Bundy saying that porn made him do it.
Dobson actively opposes blasphemy, the teaching of evolution, and the "homosexual agenda." In 1991, FOF relocated its 700-employee national headquarters from Pomona, California to Colorado Springs, in time to promote and help pass Colorado's anti-gay Amendment 2. The organization is active throughout the country, operating through such loose affiliates as the Massachusetts Family Institute, and disseminating propaganda through its syndicated radio shows and more than a dozen periodicals. Dobson was quoted in The New York Times as having singled out the wildly popular SpongeBob Squarepants television cartoon series during remarks about the video at a Washington D.C. dinner. SpongeBob, who lives in a pineapple under the sea, was "outed" by the U.S. media in 2002 after reports that the TV show and its merchandise was popular with gays. His creator, Stephen Hillenburg, said at the time that although SpongeBob was an oddball, he thought of all the characters as asexual.

Background
Dobson was born April 21, 1936 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He is not an M.D. but a Psychologist. In 1967 he was awarded a doctorate in child development from the University of Southern California. He was an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Southern California School of Medicine for 14 years. A licensed psychologist in California, He spent 17 years on the staff of the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles in the Division of Child Development and Medical Genetics.
Shower controversy
In his June 2002 Focus on the Family newsletter Dobson endorses advice by Dr. Nicolosi on preventing homosexuality in boys. The advice proposed that fathers take their sons into the shower with them where "the boy cannot help but notice that Dad has a penis, just like his, only bigger". [1]
