Karen Handel

From dKosopedia

Karen Handel (R) is Georgia's Secretary of State. She was first elected to that post in 2006, see Georgia gubernatorial election, 2006. She ran on a platform of mandating paper audit trail for electronic voting machines.

Handel defeated State Sen. Bill Stephens (R-27th District) in the GOP primary. Stephens had made paper audit trail a key plank of his campaign for Secretary of State, but in a move that surprised election reform activists who were supporting his candidacy, reneged on his promises during the 2006 legislative session.

Handel is the Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners. She was elected to this post in 2003. She had made an unsucessful run for the Fulton County Board in 2002. Previous political jobs included Deputy Chief of Staff for Governor Sonny Perdue and aide to former Vice President Dan Quayle.

Karen and her husband Steve, an executive in the IT industry, live in Roswell, Georgia.
