Kirsten E. Gillibrand (born in Albany, N.Y., December 9, 1966), a Democrat, defeated Republican incumbent John Sweeney for the 20th Congressional District of New York in the 2006 Democratic sweep of Congress (see: New York U.S. House election, 2006).
The Congresswoman was a Democratic lawyer from Albany, New York. She worked as a law clerk for Second Circuit Court of Appeals, and during the Clinton Administration, she served as Special Counsel to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Andrew Cuomo.
