Senator Mike Gabbard was first elected to the Hawaii State Senate of the Hawaii State Legislature in 2006. Gabbard represents the 19th Senatorial District, which includes the Waikele, Village Park, Royal Kunia, Makakilo, Kapolei, Kalaeloa, Honokai Hale, Portions of Waipahu and Ko 'Olina areas on the island of Oahu, in the state of Hawaii. Gabbard switched political party in 2007 and is now a Democrat.
Gabbard previously was on the Honolulu City Council (2003 - 2005).
Mike Gabbard has been a long-time opponent of equal rights for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders. As head of the Alliance for Traditional Marriage and Values, he lead a successful campaign against gay marriage in Hawaii in the 1990s.
