From dKosopedia
Norwegian-Americans are a 4.5 million strong (3 million claim solely Nowegia ancestry) ethnic group who are the descendants of Norwegian immigrants who came to America primarily in the latter half of the 19th century and the first few decades of the 20th century. Many of them fled after the 1814 Treaty of Kiel by which Denmark ceded Normark to Sweden forced the Norse to look for new opportunities.
