Osama Bin Laden

From dKosopedia

Osama bin-Ladin is the leader of a terrorist network called Al Qaeda or The Base. The organization emerged from the network of anti-Soviet Muslim guerrillas in Afghanistan supported by the U.S., Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Born in Saudi Arabia and adopted by the wealthy Yemeni Bin Laden family, bin Laden is widely considered ultimately responsible for the terrorist attacks of 9/11. There is presently a bounty of $50 million for information leading to his capture.

Arabic has its own alphabet, and when Arabic words are transliterated into our alphabet different systems of romanization can be used. In some sources this individual will be identified as "Usama bin Laden".

During the Clinton Administration he turned up in numerous documents concerned with terrorism. He was a key target in the covert operations of the Clinton Administration, and during the transition period the incoming Bush foreign policy team was warned by Sandy Berger that "you will spend more time on this guy than anything else".

For more than a decade, the CIA had a special unit dedicated to tracking Bin Laden; however, it was quietly closed down late in 2005, and its members were reassigned within the CIA. Report: CIA unit that hunted bin Laden closed

The Army's highest-ranking officer (Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker) said that he was unsure whether the U.S. military would capture or kill Osama bin Laden, adding, "I don't know that it's all that important, frankly." (Source:Washington Post, Geb. 24, 2007, pA08)
