Robert W. Ney

Bob Ney or Robert W. Ney is a convicted white collar criminal and former Ohio Republican U.S. representative from Licking County. On January 19, 2007 he was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison, fined $6,000, two years probation after release and 200 hours community service after release by U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle for his part in the corruption scandal involving lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Ney accepted $50,000 in gambling chips from a Syrian entrpreneur and a free golfing vacation in St. Andrews, Scotland. Ney's formerly safe Republican U.S. House seat 18th District was won by Democrat Zack Space.

How the Mighty Fall
Following the 2006 Ohio Republican Party Primary, Ney cancelled his re-election campaign because he was under investigation for corruption. Ney eventually plead guilty to corruption charges stemming from his work on behalf of lobbyist Jack Abramoff. His former chief of staff, Neil Volz, plead guilty to conspiracy to commit fraud, and to illegal lobbying.
On May 17, 2006, the House Ethics Committee announced they were opening an investigation into the corruption charges against Ney, concurrent with a similar investigation of Louisiana Democrat William J. Jefferson. Ney resigned from Congress on November 3, 2006. In his resignation letter to Speaker Hastert, he wrote, "Having completed all outstanding work in my congressional office, I now hereby resign from the United States House of Representatives effective close of business on Friday, Nov. 3, 2006."
Anti-Environmental Voting Record
Ney voted against the environment on five recent important legialative roll call votes: Energy (House R.C. 132); Artic Refuge (House R.C. 666); Environmental Funding (House R.C. 88); Coastal Protection (House R.C. 192) and Fuel Efficiency (House R.C. 121).
