Second Amendment to the United States Constitution

Amendment II (the Second Amendment) of the United States Constitution is the second of the ten ammendments collectively known as the Bill of Rights. According to the U.S. Supreme Court the Second Amendment guarantees the right of states to maintain militias. It does not grant an individual right to possess firearms. The Bill of Rights was passed by Congress in 1789 and became law on December 15, 1791.

The text of the 2nd Amendment reads as follows:

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
