Former Army Major Tammy Duckworth, a disabled Iraq War veteran with a cherubic face, won the 2006 Democratic Primary for the 6th Congressional District of Illinois in 2006, see Illinois U.S. House election, 2006. In the primary, she defeated Christine Cegelis, the 2004 nominee. She lost the general election for this open seat to Peter Roskam (R).
Duckworth has been appointed to run Illinois' Veterans Affairs department.
Supposedly the 37 year old from Hoffman Estates was contacted about possibly running for Congress by Rahm Emanuel, and she is one of the Fighting Dems.
update
Duckworth's husband Brian Bowlsbey, 39, a longtime Illinois Guardsman, has been ordered to serve in Iraq.
[..]"It's not something that we're really eager to do, but it's part of the job and we've trained for it for 19 years," he said yesterday, noting that he long ago fulfilled his requirement of four years of service as an officer. "If you believe in the United States you stay in and you keep doing it and you accept the risk."
Duckworth response was simple: [..]"I knew, sooner or later, there just aren't that many (eligible) people and I knew I'm one of the only ones who haven't been and some of the Guard have been twice," he said. "It's going to be difficult and we've done some planning, although I want to emphasize, everyone has these life issues, everyone that deploys has them."[1]
2007
Duckworth has stated she doesn't intent to run in 2008[2]
