Tokamak

From dKosopedia

Tokamak is a Russian acronym formed from the words toroidalnaya kamera magnitnaya katushka (in English "toroidal chamber magnetic coil") used to describe a type of reactor. Toroidal? For comparison, a doughnut is a toroidal pastry. With a Tokamak Reactor a toroidal structure is built to generate a toroidal magnetic "bottle" which contains the plasma in which a fusion reaction takes place. The shape of the bottle (and thus the stability of the reaction) can be controlled by manipulating the strength of the magnetic coils.

For more information, including the acronym in Cyrillic and photographs, see the Wikipedia article. For more about the physics involved see Fusion Physics at the CEA.
