Tony Knowles

Tony Knowles, a Democrat, served as the Governor of Alaska from 1994-2002. Due to term limits, Knowles did not run for reelection in 2002. He served as mayor of Anchorage for two terms, 1981-1987. In 2004, he lost a race for U.S. Senate to Lisa Murkowski (R). In 2006, he ran for Governor again, but lost to Sarah Palin, see Alaska gubernatorial election, 2006.
Knowles graduated from Yale University with a BA degree in economics in 1968, and served with the 82 Airborne Division in Vietnam from 1962-65.
Knowles was born in Tulsa Oklahoma, January 1, 1943 and has lived in Alaska for 35 years. He and his wife Susan have three children and live in Anchorage.
