Background
The University of Iowa was established in 1847, and it was the first U.S. public university to admit men and women on an equal basis. It is located in Iowa City, Iowa.
More than 28,000 students enroll at Iowa each year. Some 64 percent come from Iowa, 21 percent from adjoining states, and 8 percent from the remaining states. International students from 106 countries make up 7 percent of the University's enrollment.
Research
Iowa scientists, including James Van Allen, have been pioneers in space research, designing and building research instruments for more than 50 successful U.S. satellites and space probes.
Dr. Tara C. Smith studies human and animal viruses, and writes on scientific issues in her blog Aetiology.
Hygenic Lab
The University operates the state's Hygenic Lab, which provides testing for outbreaks of infectious disease and bacteriological agents like anthrax. It recently developed a new rapid test for mumps, after an outbreak in Dubuque. The lab's director, Mary Gilchrist, was fired on Oct. 3, 2006, because she complained when the University scaled down a new lab building as a result of cost overruns.
