UNSCOM

Background
UNSCOM is the United Nations special commission on eliminating weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles from the nation of Iraq after the Gulf War. It was created by Security Council resolution 687 on April 3, 1991, and was set up to implement the non-nuclear provisions of the resolution and to assist the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in the nuclear areas. On 17 December 1999, UNSCOM was replaced by the United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission, UNMOVIC, through the adoption of resolution 1284.
