Waikoloa is located on the lower western slope of Mauna Kea, is the area roughly around Waikoloa Road from Mamalahoa Hwy to the ocean. Resorts along the Waikoloa coastline include the Mauna Lani Resort, the Waikoloa Colony Villas and the Hilton Waikoloa Village. The Waikoloa area mauka or "toward the mountain" of Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. is on the verge of a surge in residential development.
Waikoloa Highlands
Developer Waikoloa Mauka LLC is planning a community, made up of 400 lots of at least one acre in size each and called Waikoloa Highlands It is planned to be a community for retirees and owners of second homes. The developer plans to start work in a year. 80 units of the development are planned for low- to moderate-income families. [1]
Surge in development planned
The existing Waikoloa Village contains 2,400 units. Projects presently being planned for the area, including Waikoloa Highlands, would triple the number of housing units in the area. Planned projects include:
- Wehilani by Castle and Cooke 700 units.
- Waikoloa Heights on 866 acres, 2,025 units.
- Aina Lea on 3,000 acres and 2,658 units with six golf courses between Waikoloa and the Mauna Lani Resort.
- Hawaii county's 800 to 1,200 homes on 270 acres north of Waikoloa Elementary School. [2]
