- DRolfe 00:26, 22 Jul 2005 (PDT) - Hi, is there any serious policy on copyright infringement here or should I just badget User:lestatdelc myself? Why do I ask? Much of the prolific work that lestatdelc does on this site is wholesale copying-pasting from other wikis, consistently without attribution. I know that you know what the GFDL says. Witness how many of my contributions over the couple days have been adding attribution to articles that were pasted here. I'm going to post a similar message over at lestatdelc's page now.

Sorry for disturbing you, but I do need some kind of help desperately on Wikipedia (not dkospedia). The kind of help I need can be found posted on the talk page of FOX news in dkospedia: http://www.dkosopedia.com/index.php/Talk:Fox_News_Channel
Now it's getting worse. I'm outnumbered 3 to 1 on the talk page of Wikipedia's FOX News, and to make things worse, I found out that a user has actually deleted all the allegations of right-wing bias in Wikipedia's CNN article but left the allegations of liberal bias intact. What's happening? Are Wikipedians becoming more conservative? I really need help with all this editing at the moment. Being a non-American I can't contribute much, but at least I can bring this to your attention. Thank you.

First of all, it's important to note that I'm neither an American nor a Canadian. I would prefer to be known only as Ivan and I am actually from an Asian country. Okay, so I'll tell you my entire story here. I hope you don't mind, and after reading this I hope you'll have a better idea as to what is going on and why I have contacted you.
Basically it all started when I was reading Wikipedia and happen to come upon the page at FOX News. Reading the sections titled Allegations of bias, I came across the following:
- A study by the Program on International Policy Attitudes reports that, even after adjusting for viewership and political preference, viewers of FOX News were more likely than the viewers of any other network to hold three beliefs, which it labels "misperceptions" [1] (PDF):
- that the US has found clear evidence in Iraq that Saddam Hussein was working closely with the al Qaeda terrorist organization
- However, in the same document PIPA admits that “a few al-Qaeda individuals visited Iraq or had contact with Iraqi officials”
- That weapons of mass destruction had been discovered in Iraq
- Arguably this is not strictly a misperception, since chemical shells have been discovered and have been used in an IED (apparently inadvertently or without much knowledge of how to use them).
- That the U.S. had received wide international support in its decision to go to war.
- This misperception is not necessarily evidence of bias by Fox News, but has possible alternative explanations, such as Fox viewers not caring about world opinion, therefore paying less attention to stories about it.
- that the US has found clear evidence in Iraq that Saddam Hussein was working closely with the al Qaeda terrorist organization
As you can see, the inclusion of the counter-arguments to each of PIPA's findings appeared to be right-wing bias. Hence I removed them and explained on the FOX News Talk Page on 03:45, Mar 7, 2005 (UTC) why I found them unacceptable.
A user named Silverback, however suggested that the counter points were required for a NPOV. His response was posted on 12:39, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC).
Following this, I attempted to revert the edited article to my last edit, namely removing the counter-points to PIPA, and included my reasons why on 03:03, Mar 8, 2005 (UTC) on the same talk page.
Another user named Trodel then argued that the PIPA report had to be removed because as he says:
I agree - there is a causal relationship problem here - and the more I research about this PIPA report the more that I think it should be excluded altogether - the survey does not follow norms and is poorly constructed. Trödel(direz) 16:32, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I responded to him at length with my replies on 05:38, Mar 9, 2005 (UTC), while at the same time attempting to explain to Silverback why I did not think the PIPA study was too ambiguous and open to interpretation on 02:53, Mar 9, 2005 (UTC).
So basically I have left the article as it is at the moment. The current revision of the FOX News article is missing the report by PIPA. I do not think I am wrong because I still respond to the arguments of the other 3 users who appear to think the PIPA study was too flawed (without explaining why in a satisfactory sense) to be included within the article itself
So much for FOX News. I happened to check the article on CNN and found out that on 13:20, Mar 6, 2005, a user named Boisemedia has actually deleted the following from the CNN article (Reason: These paragraphs have no sourcing. Writing "Conservatives say" or "Many liberal critics say..." is not suffiecient):
Liberal crtics of CNN have also accused the network of a conservative bias. Some of this criticism is documented in the David Brock book The Republican Noise Machine.
Liberal critics say that CNN favors right wing hosts and guests, such as as Robert Novak, who is actually the executive producer of Capital Gang. Liberals say the majority of newsmaker guests appear to be Republicans.
The lineup on CNN's Sunday morning show, they say, is also similarly weighted to the right. The typical panel, according to David Brock, is Jonah Goldberg of the National Review, Robert George of the New York Post, Peter Beinart of the New Republic, and Donna Brazile. Translated, Brock says this means "two movement conservatives subsidized by right wing moneybags, Beinart, a hawkish Democrat who often takes aim at his own party and edits a magazine in which the chairman of the Manhattan Institute is a significant investor; and one liberal."
Liberal critics also say Lou Dobbs, one of the major hosts, is completely biased. Dobbs was a financial supporter of George W. Bush's 2000 presidential campaign, and liberals say he treats Republicans much more favorably on air then he treats Democrats.
Liberals also point out that Dobbs endorsed the war in Iraq and has promoted books by G. Gordon Liddy.

I think you can see what is going on here. As of this writing I have not examined all of Wikipedia's articles on the US news networks, so I cannot be certain if they now display more conservative bias on them than before. All I ask is that someone look into this and try to help make Wikipedia's article more balanced. That's all. Ethereal 22:47, 9 Mar 2005 (PST)
wegerje replies I have not read any of your links. I do not believe that I am the person to help you. I would recommend that you put a diary up in dKos and see what support you get there. There is no hurry in this project of yours. In fact hurrying will be your enemy. Your best approach is to understand that this is a long haul project. Do very small changes over long periods of time. Actually I am a relative newcomer to wiki's so my advice is theorhetical not practical. It would be wise to learn how disputes are worked out at wikipedia and use that process fully. I believe that they have what is called a "controversial topic" notice (or something like that). It may be way too soon for such a step I don't know. Good luck. wegerje 20:41, 16 Mar 2005 (PST)

I don't really think so. Did you see I have a bot that is counting votes? it counts the featured article candidate page... I can make it count anything. It's approval voting because that was simple, I want to add an "against" vote as well. anyway, cheers. seems like there was something else I wanted to say.
