- Military putsch against Ethiopian dictator Haile Mengusti Mariam fails; 3,500 executed. Severed head and mutilated body of General Damese Bulto is paraded around Asmara.

- January 20: George H.W. Bush inaugurated as the 41st President of the United States.
- February 12: Darwin Day
- February 15: The Soviet Union completes its withdrawl from Afghanistan.
- June 3: Iran's theocratic leader Ayatollah Khomeini dies.
- June 4: The Tiananmen Square protests end violently, as the government of China kills hundreds or thousands of unarmed civilians. The protestors had gathered, beginning April 15, in the heart of Beijing to demonstrate for democratic reforms.
- June 5: After negatiations between the government and Lech Walesa's Solidarity movement, elections are held in Poland, sweeping the communists from power. Hungary liberalizes its political system and schedules elections for 1990.
- June 28: Luxuriating in the vicarious pleasures of ancient victimization, Slobodan Milosevic addreses one million angry Serbs at a rally at the Kosova Kalje battlefield on the 600th anniversary of the much cherished defeat of the Serbs by the Ottoman Turks.
- November 9: The East German government opens the border between East and West Germany. Germans joyfully tear down the Berlin Wall, symbolically ending the Cold War. The communist governments of Czechosolvakia, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania soon collapse as well.
- December 6: Mysogenist gun nut enters engineering school in Montreal, Canada, seperates women from men and shoots 27, killing 14 young women.
- December 25: Liberian Civil War begins.
