Auburn, Massachusetts

Auburn is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The population was 15,901 at the 2000 census. The estimated 2005 population is 16,400. The median household income in 2000 was $51,753 amd the 2000 median house value was $137,400.


History

First settled in 1714, the town was officially incorporated as the town of Ward on April 10, 1778 ad named to honor Major General Artemas Ward, the commander of colonial forces in Cambridge until Washington arrived. A petition to the legislature to change the town name was granted in 1837 and the name Auburn was adopted.

On March 16, 1926, Robert H. Goddard launched the planet's first liquid fuel rocket on Pakachoag Hill in Auburn, Massachusetts.
